Défis textiles IIa

As mentioned  before I wasn't completely happy with how the transparency of the organza played in my first version. So I made this one where I attached small pieces of organza in layers on a quilted basis. I used just a few stitches by hand to attach the organza so that it would have maximum freedom of movement.

35 x 35 cm

I like how transparency and intensity of colors changes depending from where you look at it.

First I prepared a quilt with a printed and a solid part because I wanted to explore how the organza looked on both. I made the quilt the same way as here.

Il quilt l'ho fatto come qui.

Meanwhile I wish I had done the solid part bigger. I like both the organza on the solid as on the print. I like how the print adds interest and peeks through the organza but I think I would chose a more muted print now and maybe pay attention that a bow doesn't look like a spider (!).

I thought the straight line quilting would pair nicely with the organza squares but now I find it too hard. I would no longer quilt the basis but only use the hand stitches on the organza as quilting.

So this was my second attempt at working with organza. What kind of material would the third and last challenge involve? Meanwhile I know and oh my ...!

Intanto lo so caspita!

Défis textiles II // 3 and last

The small pieces looked still fine on the design wall, the folded organza stripes still stood up nicely and shined, and I liked the layout.

L'organza piegata stava ancora in piedi e brillava. Insomma mi piaceva.

So I went and sewed them together. Of course all these narrow seams caused the folded organza to lay flat. This is not what I had wanted! And I pressed, pressed, and pressed some more. Meanwhile I had painfully learnt that I better used a cloth between quilt top and iron to prevent organza to stick to the iron! And pressed and pressed. There were a lot of seams to press and imagine how much pressure I had to apply where eight seams joined in one point! Sadly I realized that all of this pressing of course flattened the organza even more. So I lost an important part of what I had liked: The transparency of the organza resulting from the ability to stand up against the flat fabric underneath. At least part of the shine remained. I forgot to take a picture of the sewed top before attaching it to the batting.

Also habe ich alles zusammen genäht.

E mi misi a cucire insieme tutto.

I had decided that this was going to be my first no-binding quilt. This is how I did it: After pinning the top to the batting I sewed very close along the four sides. Then I cut the batting that was sticking out.

I choose a neutral fabric for the back. Because later on after turning inside out I did not want to close a gap along one side of the finished quilt I cut it into two pieces just to sew them back together and ripping open a little bit of the seam.

Then I pinned the right side of the top to the right side of the back and sewed again along the four sides just inside the already present first seam.

I cut the back to the same size of the quilt, sloped the corners, opened the seam in the center of back as much as needed to turn everything inside out, carefully poking at the corners.

I closed the opening in the back with some hand stitches and gave it another nice press (!). And there it was, my first no-binding quilt!

I went for some stitch in the ditch quilting and I was done.

Not exactly what I had envisaged. It's a little too busy and restless. And you have to look hard to notice the aspects of transparency. Probably also due to the format that is simply too small for what I wanted to achieve. But I can't say that I hate it! I see romance and poetry in this mini quilt and was happy my "juror" noticed this aspect as well!

Again, Thank you, Danke, Grazie, Merci Maryline for an excellent challenge that was fun and demanding at the same time and brought me learning and satisfaction!

Guess what! Because of the loss of transparency I decided to try a second and different attempt!

Ratet mal!

I was fascinated by the transparency, shine, and change of colors of the material. First I thought I could work with layers, where cuts in the upper layer would reveal something surprising underneath. But my helpless attempts with some other similar material I had didn't convince me at all!

Then I looked for other fabric to go along with. First I found a print with similar colors of which I thought that the romantic, ornamental print would be a good match with the delicate organza. Also I thought that the white would provide a good contrast.

Then I tried to take away some sweetness by adding more transparent and opaque colors and another darker print for more contrast. Still I wanted to keep a rather soft and tender impression.

I really liked the shine and color play of the organza when folded. This is what brought me to sew together strips of fabric with folded organza in between.

Also I thought of adding shades of colors by covering some fabric with one layer of transparent fabric.

I was kind of happy so far. I especially liked how the folded organza stood up against the flat fabric. At this time it was clear to me that I had to do something with this strata fabric. Just stripes seemed too little, just horizontal and vertical blocks too clumsy. Maybe some striped paper would help me find a good layout?

So weit, so gut.

I had to think of my quilt Bali that I pretty much liked and decided to go with the same design. So I sewed and cut more striped fabric into triangles.

My pieces were getting pretty small at this stage. Was this rendering what I was hoping for? More about it next time.

Meine Stücke wurden inzwischen ziemlich klein. Ob ich so das erwünschte erreichen würde? Mehr darüber nächstes Mal.

I miei triangoli ora diventavano alquanto piccoli. Ero sulla buona strada? Di più alla prossima.

T1 // 5 and last !

And there you have it, my finished T1! My prototype for using only HST. I like the color scheme and the combination of printed and solid fabrics.
Now I'm going to make a few bigger ones with different fabric/color choices and see what happens.
