Scraps II // 1

After finishing Scraps I I still wasn't done with hand piecing little blocks using my scraps. So I started with Scraps II. This time I'm putting a tiny white and black patch in the center of the blocks followed by one round of solids. I'll also include some little polka dots. We'll see where this leads. Anyway, I think it's going to be a happy, cheerful quilt.

Noticed the change of machines in the midst of it?

Steps III also goes Blogger's Quilt Festival

This time I'm participating with two quilts at Blogger's Quilt Festival.

I was so pleased with how Steps III turned out eventually that I have decided to enter it into the Original Design category. The making of this quilt has been quite a journey and you can read more about it here.

I finished it last fall. It measures 148 x 116 cm and is made of upcycled men's shirts and solid cottons. Machine pieced and machine quilted. I also really love the back!

Scraps I // 10 and last !

Managed to take some pictures of my finished quilt Scraps I. This was fun making! I enjoyed the combination of hand and machine piecing as well as hand and machine quilting. The colored block centers have been hand pieced and framed by a single hand quilted line, the binding has been hand stitched to the back. All the rest is machine sewed.

182 x 140 cm

Kernel // 9

I wasn't totally happy with the back so I did some alterations. I'll set it aside for now while I'm thinking about the quilting. In the meantime I'm going to have some fun with another scrap project.

Lemon and Limes // 3 and last

...and then I summed it all up in this last one, which is also twice as big as the others.

Lemon and Limes // 1

As a change from sewing and travel reports I'm going to post a little about my last paintings. Again they were all made in class during last August through January. While in the previous semester the proposed theme has been water, this time the topic was fruits and vegetables. I saw a photocopy of a painting of a still life with a Lemon and several limes. Unfortunately, the loose photocopy didn't have any references to the artist or title of the painting and I'm sorry I can't pay credits to the person that inspired me to the following paintings. For once, I decided to stick to the very same subject and to paint variations playing with different brush strokes and colors.

They are all acrylic on paper and measure about 28 x 19 cm. Here we go with a first set where I kept the same color scheme.

Meanwhile the top is finished and so is the back. While I'm procrastinating preparing the sandwich I keep thinking about how to quilt this one. I want the quilting to add interest without being too distracting since I think that the top has already a lot of movement going on. Plus this is still a utilitarian quilt so it has to remain soft and cosy. I have thought of some stitch in the ditch but don't see it really feasible. Maybe some diagonal gently undulated lines could work? Or rather straight lines like here? Or just a good old stipple pattern like here? And what kind of thread color will I be using? I welcome your ideas!

Kernel // 7

Keeping the paper inside delivers crisp seams but while it's been a good idea to keep the paper when sewing two blocks together, it wasn't clever to sew intersecting seams. I've had a hard time removing the paper in itself but removing it from within crossing seams allowances has been hell. It has taken me two days to remove all the paper. Luckily I realized I had this issue before completing the whole top what I think saved me another day of work. Of course this whole problem also originated from the fact that I had left too little seam allowances to start with, which forced me to join the blocks by sewing over the paper foundation instead of just on the outer part along the paper. Lots of lessons learned here!

I've started to assemble the top. I wasn't sure when to take out the paper. I've decided to keep it for a while and see how it goes.
